Description of Divisions
Meridian Youth Baseball is here to keep baseball fun as well as develop the skills of every ballplayer. Baseball is broken into to three main Leagues: Cal Ripken League (4-12 years old), Babe Ruth League (13-15 year olds) and Babe Ruth Softball League (6-16 year olds). Players that are league age 9 years old - 15 years old tryout in March. Players that are 4 to 8 years old do not tryout and are placed on teams in the respective division corresponding to their age and school location. All levels and divisions bat all players. See below for further information.
T-Ball Division
The T-Ball Division serves as the introduction to baseball for boys and girls 4, 5 and 6 years old. At this level teams will usually be formed by the elementary school they attend. The emphasis on this division will be to introduce your child to the game of baseball and to have fun learning the basics of hitting, catching, throwing and base running. All players will hit the ball off of a hitting tee. Since this is an introductory division, scores will not be kept during games and there will be no division winners or an end of season tournament.
The season typically starts in mid April and goes until the 1st week of June.
Coach Pitch Division
The Coach Pitch Division is the second step in the youth baseball and softball program of MYBS. Players in this division are 7 years old. Players who are 6 and 8 year olds may also participate in this division if there is space available, but 7 year olds have the first priority. At this level teams will usually be formed by the elementary school they attend. This division is purely instructional with the emphasis on continuing to develop the fundamental skills of baseball such as hitting, catching, throwing and base running. The ball will be pitched by the coach and a stronger emphasis will be placed on learning and playing by the rules to get your child ready for the next level of play. Since this is an instructional division, scores will not be kept during games and there will be no division winners or an end of season tournament.
The season typically starts in mid April and goes until the 1st week of June.
Prep Minor Division
The Prep Minor Division is third step in the youth baseball and softball program of MYBS. Players in this division are 8 years old. Players who are 7 year olds may also participate in this division if the player has played at least one year in the coach pitch division and there is space available, but 8 year olds have the first priority. At this level teams will usually be formed by the elementary school they attend. This division is where players are introduced to playing baseball on a regulation size Cal Ripken diamond with 60-foot base paths and a pitching distance of 46 feet. Beginning in the 2008 season, the Prep Minor Division will begin using player pitching rather than a pitching machine. After the first two walks of an inning, a coach will take over pitching and finish the inning in order to keep the pace quick enough to reduce boredom and loss of attention by the players on the field. This division provides an excellent way to continue teaching the fundamentals of the game and building player confidence. This is also the level where players first experience the competition of scores being kept and an end of season tournament.
The season typically starts in mid April and goes until the 1st week of June.
A Division
Players in this division are primarily 9 and 10 years old. At this level players will be assessed and drafted onto teams. All 9 year old players will automatically be assigned to this division. All 10 year old players that are not drafted to a AAA 60 foot team will also be automatically placed in this division. All official Cal Ripken rules will be followed and games will be played on a diamond with 60-foot base paths and a pitching distance of 46 feet. The emphasis of this division is to have teammates of their own age and experience level, have players continue building and refining their fundamental skills while beginning to understand game strategy. Game scores and standings are recorded and upon completion of the regular season, a post-season tournament is held. Players participating in this division can also be considered for our 9 and 10 year old All Star teams.
The season typically starts in early April and goes until the 1st week of June

AAA 60’s Division
Players in this division are 10, 11 and 12 years old. All players will be required to perform an assessment to determine the players skills based on catching, fielding, throwing and hitting. Managers will then draft players based upon the player’s assessment and their individual team needs. All players are re-drafted each year . All official Cal Ripken rules will be followed and games will be played on a diamond with 60-foot base paths and a pitching distance of 46 feet. The emphasis of this division is to continue to focus on developing individual and overall team skills and managers will look to field the most competitive team. Game scores and standings are recorded and upon completion of the regular season, a post-season tournament is held. Players participating in this division can also be considered for our 10, 11 and 12 year old All Star teams. AAA division has one manager option and two coaches options.
The season typically starts in mid March and goes until the 1st week of June.
AAA 70’s Division
This new division, which has a 50' pitching distance and 70' base paths, is offered as an additional option to our current league set-up, and has a tournament trail from district competition through the World Series, just as the current division enjoys. The AAA 70’s Division is the highest level of Cal Ripken Baseball and is considered a highly competitive division. Players in this division are 11 and 12 years old. All players ,except coaches options will be required to perform an assessment to determine the players skills based on catching, fielding, throwing and hitting. Managers will then draft players based upon the player’s assessment and their individual team needs. All players are re-drafted each year. The emphasis of this division is to continue to focus on developing individual and overall team skills and managers will look to field the most competitive team. Babe Ruth 13yr old division only and 14-15yr old division
Players who compete in the Babe Ruth are 13 to 15 years old. All players will be required to perform an assessment to determine the players skills based on catching, fielding, throwing and hitting. Players will be drafted following their assessments to teams in either the 13 year old or 14-15 year old divisions. All official Babe Ruth rules will be followed and games will be played on a diamond with a 90-foot base path and a pitching distance of 60 feet 6 inches. Upon completion of the regular season, a post-season tournament will be held. Players participating in these divisions can be considered for our 13, 14 and15 year old All Star teams.
The emphasis of the 13 year old division is to serve as a transitional year for players moving to the “big” field. Studies have shown that many young players lose interest in the game of baseball at this age due to decreased playing time and the fear of competing with players who have already experienced one to two years playing on the standard 90-foot diamond. This division will provide a competitive environment to allow kids to compete with other players at their own experience level.
The emphasis of the 14-15 year old division is to further develop the player’s skills and to prepare them for high school baseball. All 15 year old players will be drafted in this league before any 13 and 14 year olds can be drafted.
The season typically starts in mid May
Babe Ruth Softball ( 8U, 10U, 12U, 14U,)
Babe Ruth Softball is designed for girls ages five through sixteen. Age divisions offered are 8 & Under, 10 & Under, 12 & Under and 14 & Under.
The primary emphasis of Babe Ruth Softball is education, skill development, participation for players at all levels of athletic ability, and to ensure the participants have fun. Babe Ruth Softball intends for every child that has a desire to participate in the sport to be able to do so. Our softball league continues to grow and added four new teams last year. This league will be using Linder Middle School and our new softball fields at Meridian Settlers Park. We also travel to other cities in the Valley.
The 8U division is designed to develop the player’s softball skills and fundamentals. Players that are 8 and younger will be formed by the elementary school they attend and will be a machine pitch only division.
10U through 14U divisions are designed to continue to develop player’s skills and fundamentals but use live pitching and are considered competitive divisions. Players that are 9 and older will be required to perform an assessment to determine their skills based on catching, fielding, throwing and hitting. Managers will then draft players based upon the player’s assessment and their individual team needs.
Note: In 2007, our 10U All-Star team won the State Championship and our 12U and 14U All-Stars were Runner-ups! Congratulations to the Meridian softball teams for their accomplishments.
